Frequently Asked Questions

  • A:  You can contact me via the Contact Page or call me on 07743897874 for a chat about how I might be able to help.

  • A: When you arrive we will have a chat about your reasons for coming for treatment, and what you hope to get out of the session. I will also ask you a few questions about your medical history to find out if there is anything I need to be aware of. You will stay fully clothed while you relax on the therapy couch. The whole session will take 1 hour.

  • A: Each person can have a different experience during the session, so it is a very individual thing. It is common, however, for clients to report feelings of relaxation, warmth or a pulsing sensation in areas that are being worked on.

  • A: That is not necessary. Your treatment will be done over your clothes.

  • A: My practise is in my home in Brookwood village, a suburb of Woking. It is easily accessible by car. If you are planning on coming by train, I am a 5 minute walk from Brookwood train station.

  • A: Yes, a free parking space is available.

  • A: CST uses a very gentle, non-invasive touch to connect with areas of restriction in the body which can often be at the source of pain and dysfunction. It can have a powerful impact on your central nervous system, enabling the body’s tissues to relax and self-correct.

  • A: The two words joined refer to the ‘head to tail’ of the system which includes the brain and spinal cord – ‘Cranio’ (cranium) and ‘Sacral’ (sacrum/ base of the spine).

  • A: There are a lot of techniques that are done at the head, and also at the sacrum (base of the spine). But this is actually a full body therapy. I will work where your body shows me there are restrictions in the tissue. Sometimes, the pain you are experiencing might have a cause that is in a different place. So it isn’t unusual for me to work somewhere else on the body.

  • A: You are unique. Every body responds differently. However, I do recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours after a session to allow your body to ‘settle’ and allow the treatment to integrate.

  • A: Absolutely! None of us function at 100% even if we think we are just fine. Even if you feel good, CST can help you maintain that sense of health and wellbeing and may even help you to feel even better.

  • A: CST is not a substitute for medical care. If you have any concerns then I recommend you speak to your doctor.

  • A: CranioSacral Therapy was originally developed by Dr John E. Upledger, an osteopathic physician. While assisting in a spinal surgery in 1970, he noticed a fluid rhythm in the body which he hadn’t observed before. It couldn’t be explained by his contemporaries or in the medical books. Some years later, after doing an osteopathy course, he heard for the first time the theory that the bones of the skull are not in fact fused together. He theorised that some kind of pressure system was happening inside the cranium causing the movement that he had felt in that surgery years before.

From 1975, he worked as professor of biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. He developed his techniques for a gentle manual therapy to evaluate and treat the craniosacral system and demonstrated positive effects on the brain and spinal cord.

In 1985 he established the Upledger Institute to teach his techniques to practitioners, so that people worldwide could benefit from this powerful therapy.

I have completed my certification with the Upledger Institute.

  • A: The short answer is yes. However, it will be helpful for me know a few details of when and what the operation was for. If you are still under the care of a consultant, then I would recommend you ok any treatment with them first.

  • A: While CST is safe for children of all ages, I do not treat children. I work with adults of all ages, 18 and over.

  • A: Due to the gentleness of the touch used in this treatment, sometimes people ask me if I am doing Reiki. The short answer is no. CST is a hands-on therapy which works directly on the body’s tissues. I work by listening to your body and following what the tissues need to do.

  • A: The CranioSacral System is made up of all the bones and soft tissues that give structure to the cranium and vertebral column, as well as the fluids which bathe your brain and spinal cord.

  • A: This is the rhythm of the spinal fluid moving around the craniosacral system. Just as blood flows, and you can feel it pumping around the body, I can feel the rhythm of the spinal fluid. I can use this rhythm to determine areas of restriction in the body if it isn’t ‘flowing’ freely.

  • A: In this therapy we believe there is in each one of us the innate ability to know how to heal

ourselves. We call this the Inner Wisdom. You could also call it your inner knowing or your intuition. CranioSacral Therapy can help you connect with your Inner Wisdom to help you heal deeply rooted restrictions and tension patterns, even ones which have been in the system for many years.
